CINEMATOGRAPHER

MY STORY
Over the years, I’ve worked across feature films, documentaries, travel series, and branded content for clients like Tanishq, Radisson, Thums Up and Dabur. From intimate indie films to large-scale productions, in both fiction and non-fiction, I combine technical precision with guerrilla creativity - always striving to craft frames that resonate deeply and linger in the viewer’s subconscious.

I’m Mohit Kakodkar, a cinematographer and visual storyteller driven by a passion for exploring the many ways stories come alive on screen. My journey began with a degree in Computer Engineering, but my true calling led me behind the lens.

Guidance That Shaped Me

"We are, and will always remain, students of cinema. Every day is a chance to learn something new, even from a child or someone far junior. In this creative world, ego has no place when receiving ideas"
- Nadeem Khan

"Plan your lighting and shots before stepping on set. Once there, focus on execution, channel your energy into guiding the team and getting it done"
- Rajan Kothari

"A shadow isn’t a flat shape, but a 3D form and mastering it is what elevates a cinematographer"
- Shirish Dessai

CHEERHARAN

A social documentary on the Jat reservation protests that claimed 30 innocent lives, directed by my good friend Kuldeep Ruhil. I was the DOP, and our task was to visit families who had lost their loved ones - listening, capturing, and creating montages that conveyed their grief without ever asking them to perform.
I still remember an old mother who had lost her son. She broke down before the interview even began. The director asked the crew to step out, and as I left, I quietly rolled the camera already set on the tripod. She never gave the interview, but what we captured in that moment was priceless.
In non-fiction, intuition often guides you more than planning. Sometimes you just have to trust it and hope that luck stays with you.

RAJA, RASOI Aur ANYA KAHANIYAAN
I worked as Second Unit DOP alongside the brilliant director Gaurav Mehra and cinematographer Ankit Trivedi. With a tiny crew of just seven, we traveled across East and Northeast India, capturing food not just as cuisine but as beauty and the show went on to become a huge success.
Gaurav’s eye for detail and Ankit’s calm, thoughtful approach shaped me deeply after film school. From stitching stories visually, to shooting intuitively for the edit, to experimenting with “free-lensing” for striking images, I learned immensely. It remains one of the projects I’m most grateful to have been part of.
